Dengfu R01: Review with CT Analysis of Lightweight Road Frame
dbike
29 maggio 2022
The Dengfu R01 is a lightweight road bike frame, optimized for climbing. Ready for rim breaks with a BB30 bottom bracket and supporting full internal cable routing, it is an ideal frame if you want a featherweight bike. The frame weighs below 900 g for a 58 cm (XL!) size and only costs 550 US$, thus outvalues frames from other brands such as Specialized, Trek, Canyon, Cannondale, BMC and Giant easily. Despite a corroded bolt for the water bottle cage, I never had any problems with this frame after well above 25k kilometers. The CT scan analysis revealed some voids at the mating regions where the tubes are connected to each other. From a structural point of view, there should not be any problem with that. The only downside are the voids in the bottom bracket area, which probably reduce the stiffness of the most important area of the bike significantly.

Dengfu R01 ULTRALIGHT FRAME
Creato: 08 aprile 2026The reviewer shares a detailed, long-term review of the Dengfu R01 frame purchased in 2017. They discuss the ordering process, cost, shipping, and overall experience over 25,000 km of riding. They then conduct a physical and CT scan analysis of the frame's build quality. The reviewer states the frame has been reliable with no major complications, but the CT scan reveals several manufacturing voids, particularly in the bottom bracket and chainstay mating areas. They are generally happy with the frame's performance and weight but note the build quality is not the highest, especially in critical stress areas.

Pros
- The ordering process and communication with Dengfu (via Melody/Tony) were flawless, fast, and in English.
- Shipping to Europe was quick (about 1.5 weeks) and the packaging was excellent, protecting the frame well.
- The frame arrived with a raw carbon matte finish as ordered.
- It features full internal cable routing.
- The frame fit the reviewer perfectly (size 58cm for 193cm height).
- Over four to five years and 25,000 km, the reviewer had no major complications with the frame.
- The bottom bracket never had any creaking issues.
- The frame weight is good: the extra-large size weighed roughly below 1000g with headset bearings, derailleur hanger, and bottle cage still attached, close to the claimed 850g +/-50g.
Cons
- The bottle cage nut corroded and became stuck inside the frame, a minor complication.
- The frame uses a BB30 bottom bracket, which is not ideal for the reviewer's Shimano groupset (24mm axle), requiring adapters and reducing stiffness.
- The maximum recommended tire clearance is 25mm; 28mm tires definitely do not fit.
- The CT scan revealed "some small voids" and "a little bit of voids" in the seat stay to bottom bracket mating area.
- The CT scan showed "some voids" and "definitely some voids" in the bottom bracket area, which the reviewer states "shouldn't be here" and is "not really a good sign."
- The lower part of the bottom bracket area had "lots of voids visible" and was "not super stiff" and "not very well made."
- The seat stay merger block had "quite a lot of voids and even... larger voids."
- The chainstay to bottom bracket mating area had "a lot of voids."
Key Points
- Ordered in September 2017 for $550 for the frame, $619 total with shipping and fees.
- Size 58cm, raw carbon matte finish.
- Full internal cable routing.
- BB30 bottom bracket with a molded-in aluminum shell.
- Standard 27.2mm seatpost.
- Maximum tire clearance: 25mm.
- Frame weight claim: 850g +/-50g; reviewer's XL frame with components was roughly below 1000g.
- Fork weight: 336g.

Dengfu R01
Creato: 03 febbraio 2026The reviewer, Dominique, shares his long-term experience with the Dengfu R01 frame, which he has ridden for approximately 25,000 km over 4-5 years. He details the ordering process, cost, shipping, and a thorough physical and CT scan analysis of the frame. He states the ordering and communication with Dengfu (via Melody/Tony) was flawless, shipping was quick, and packaging was good. The frame arrived with a raw carbon matte finish, features full internal cable routing, a BB30 bottom bracket, a 27.2mm seatpost, and a 58cm size fitting his 193cm height. He notes a maximum tire clearance of 25mm. During use, he experienced only a minor complication with a corroded bottle cage nut. His major critique is the BB30 standard, which is not ideal for his Shimano groupset (24mm axle). He performed a CT scan to examine the carbon layup, finding the overall build quality acceptable but noting significant voids in the bottom bracket area and some in the chainstay and seatstay junctions, which he considers non-critical except for the bottom bracket voids potentially reducing stiffness. He concludes he is 'pretty happy' overall, apart from the bottom bracket area concerns.
