Hambini - £650 Complete Bargain... Mechanically Brilliant and Get your OWN Name printed

Description

In this video I take a close look at the Karvon carbon wheelset, a set of carbon wheels that costs roughly £650 delivered. At that price point the carbon wheel market is normally a bit of a gamble. Many budget wheels look impressive in the specifications but end up cutting corners on hubs, spokes or overall build quality.

These wheels are a bit different.

For the money, the Karvon wheels are exceptionally good value. Instead of chasing ultra light weights or marketing driven features, the design focuses on something far more useful for most riders: strength, durability and sensible engineering choices.

The rims are 50 mm deep with a 24 mm internal width, which makes them compatible with modern tyre sizes and suitable for everything from fast road riding to endurance rides and even light gravel use.

The wheels use Alpina bladed steel spokes and external nipples, which is a practical choice that improves reliability and makes servicing straightforward. Many wheels in this price bracket use cheaper spokes or harder to service designs.

The hub is produced by H Works and uses a ratchet style drive mechanism with multiple seals and large bearings. It is not designed to be the lightest hub on the market, but it is designed to last. H Works has a good reputation in the world of hubs and whilst this isn't their lightest offering, the hubs demonstrated excellent manufacturing tolerances.

In the video I go through the full construction of the wheelset, including the rim design, spoke configuration and hub internals. I also compare them with more expensive wheels such as the 9Velo Extreme to explain where the differences really are.

These wheels have exceptionally good manufacturing tolerances for the money, they are mechanically excellent.

The reviewer provides a highly positive review of the Carvon wheelset, which appears to be the product in question, though the exact model name 'Karvon KVS50 Aplina Steel Spoke 700C Road Disc Wheelset 24H/24H' is not explicitly stated in the transcript. The reviewer gives the wheels a perfect score of 10, praising their tank-like build quality, suitability for bikepacking, gravel, and road use, and excellent value at around £650. Key highlights include the 50mm deep, tubeless-ready rim with no spoke holes, 24H/24H cross-lacing with Alpena steel spokes, and a well-sealed Hworks Gravelspec hub. The reviewer notes the smooth ride quality, good aerodynamics, and the option for custom logos.

AI-Summary

Pros

  • Rated a perfect 10 by the reviewer
  • Built like a tank, very strong
  • Suitable for bikepacking, gravel, and road use
  • Excellent value for money (~£650)
  • Rim has no spoke holes, making it tubeless-ready and eliminating need for rim tape with tubes
  • Rim is extremely strong with no give in sidewalls
  • Rim is quite aerodynamic with a thoughtful profile
  • Alloy nipples are fully exposed for easy adjustment
  • 24 spokes on each wheel, cross-laced on both sides for torque handling and redundancy
  • Spokes are Alpena steel, flat-bladed, and mildly aerodynamic
  • Alpena spokes provide a smoother ride with less vibration and better damping than Sapim spokes
  • Hub is a Hworks Gravelspec hub, well-sealed with multiple seals and a U-shaped seal design for durability
  • Hub uses a large 15267 bearing
  • Freehub body is 7000 series alloy, which is stiff
  • Option to have a custom logo, no logo, or your own logo
  • Spoke tensions are really good with hardly any deviation
  • Runouts are all pretty much zero
  • Vibration from the wheel is very low

Cons

  • Budget scope of delivery: does not include tubeless valves or anything else
  • The rim's mild taper ends in a 'cliff edge' profile (noted as a design observation, not necessarily a con)
  • The wheels are heavier than premium carbon-spoke wheels (implied by comparison)
