X-Lab GT8 Final Review: The Best Gravel Bike for $3,199? (700+ Miles)

The X-Lab GT8 may be the best-value carbon gravel bike in its class—but is it the right bike for you? After riding the XLAB GT8 for more than 700 miles, I’m sharing my definitive, long-term review of its speed, comfort, geometry, components, limitations, and upgrade potential.
At $3,199, the X-Lab GT8 combines a carbon frame, 45 mm-deep Branta carbon wheels, a Shimano GRX drivetrain, integrated carbon cockpit, power meter, internal storage, and clearance for tires up to 55 mm. It delivers race-bike handling at the front with a compliant, endurance-oriented rear triangle—making it a fast yet comfortable “Gran Turismo” gravel bike.
In this final GT8 review, I explain:
• What the X-Lab GT8 feels like on gravel and pavement
• Why its geometry blends gravel racing with endurance comfort
• How it performs in 20 mph road pacelines
• Whether the stock Branta C45 carbon wheels need upgrading
• GT8 tire clearance, gearing, and 1x versus 2x considerations
• Fit concerns for riders with neck, shoulder, or back limitations
• The challenge of changing its fully integrated cockpit
• How we adapted a Redshift Top Shelf handlebar for additional rise
• Every upgrade I made to my personal GT8
• Who should—and should not—buy this gravel bike
The short answer: the GT8 is ideal for riders who want road-bike speed and precise handling without giving up gravel capability or long-distance comfort. Its aggressive front-end position may require careful fitting for riders accustomed to upright endurance gravel bikes, but for the right cyclist, the GT8 offers exceptional performance and equipment for the price.
My GT8 upgrades include Boyd Pinnacle Race carbon wheels, Vittoria Terreno T30 tires, a WTB Gravelier saddle, Hope brake rotors, Clik Valves, Wolf Tooth pedals, and additional bikepacking accessories. The stock Branta C45 wheelset weighs approximately 1,550 grams and is already excellent—most riders will have no reason to replace it.
